Casa Mañen, dates back well into the 19th century. The 180 year-old building was first used as one of the two City Homes for the family owners of a vast coffee plantation. After the death of the last patriarch in 1962, the family, anxious to encourage education in Xela, permitted the home to be used as a primary school until it fell into disrepair in the late 1980s. Many of its alumni still return to visit their old Alma Mater. Purchased in 1991, by its present owners, the building underwent vast restoration. It was of great importance to maintain the original thick adobe walls and the colonial architectural style and beauty. Over six years went into the restoration of this local heritage. All of the improvements and additions were planned to blend in with the original designs found in this historic area. Casa Mañen is located just two blocks from one of the prettiest central parks in Guatemala, Parque a Centro America. Casa Mañen is in the heart of old Xela, within walking distance of the cathedrals, museums, and other points of interest; while only a bus ride to the regional scenic spots and local markets The owner, Dana Mannen, welcomes you to Guatemala, Quetzaltenango, and this beautiful, one of a kind, Bed and Breakfast Hotel. You enter a tranquil flower garden replete with a rock waterfall, wooden walkways, green grass and wooden benches. Wide open-air corridors, lined with hand carved furniture and local pottery, lead you to one of the nine well appointed singles, doubles or suites. Each room is beautifully decorated with local handicrafts, hand woven wool blankets and rugs. Rooms are spacious and romantic, most with fireplaces for those chilly evenings. All Rooms, of course, have private baths and cable television. Casa Mañens rooftop garden and bar offer a panoramic view of majestic mountains and the Xela clear blue skies.
